Yosemite National Park hours: Is Yosemite open on Labor Day? [Updated September 2022]
With over 400 national parks extending over 80 million acres, the National Park System has parks in all 50 states and U.S. territories, including Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, American Samoa, and Guam. So whether you are driving, hiking, camping, swimming, fishing, or just want to enjoy some pristine natural splendor, you are likely wondering if Yosemite National Park is open this Labor Day.
The Yosemite area was initially inhabited by the Ahwahneechee, meaning “dwellers” in Ahwahnee. Their diet consisted mainly of acorns, salmon, and deer. It is believed that their demise was a result of the California Gold Rush and European American expansion into the west. There was a series of wars between the California settlers and the Native Americans over the contested Yosemite territory, eventually resulting in the remaining Ahwahneechee to primarily be driven out of the Yosemite boundary.
Designated as a national park and first protected in 1864 by president Abraham Lincoln, Yosemite is well known for its massive granite cliffs, pristine waterfalls, beautiful lakes, and significant biodiversity. Yosemite is home to over a thousand plant species and hundreds of wildlife species, including black bears, red foxes, grey foxes, cougars, coyotes, and skunks. Common trees include pines, oaks, cedars, sequoias, and firs. Popular activities include hiking, fishing, biking, rafting, and climbing.
