Serena Williams’ indicated earlier in the month that she would be “evolving away from tennis.” Her next appearance was the US Open, and it could be the final event of her career. Williams’ stay in Queens, NY started with an opening round win over Danka Kovinic. But her next challenge would be Anett Kontaveit, the second-ranked player in the entire world.

In an upset, Williams defeated Kontaveit 7-6, 2-6, 6-2 to pull off the win and secure a berth in the third round. Williams is now 42-0 in the first two rounds of the US Open, per the ESPN broadcast.

The first set was a tense one between both stars, where they had to go to a tiebreaker, which went Williams’ way. From there, it was Konteveit to take the second set. But once it reached the decisive third set, it was all Williams, and she closed things out in epic fashion.
